Samenvatting
Extensive study on the Dutch lawyer Laurens van der Hem (1621-1678) and his famous composite atlas (the 46-volumes of his expanded copy of Joan Blaeu's famous Atlas Major, now in the National Library in Vienna- better known as the Atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem. The book is based on Dr. Erlend de Groot's Dutch thesis of 2001. This adapted, extended English translation describes the life and works of Laurens van der Hem and the origins of his famous atlas, placing the atlas in its historical, cultural and artistic context. Dr. De Groot's thesis was awarded with two prices: a Praemium Studiorum by the Foundation Praemium Erasmium (2001) for excellent dissertations in the field of humaniora; and the Karel van Mander price (2002) for the best study in the history of art, 1999-2002.
