The head of the Japanese lordless warrior Seiji Shimizu, supporter of the movement seeking to "revere the Emperor and expel the barbarians". Convicted for the murder of the British major George Baldwin and the Irish lieutenant Robert Bird in the village of Kamakura on November 21st, 1864, which would become known as the Kamakura Incident, he had been executed at the prison on the Kurayami-zaka slope in the town of Tobe on December 28th. Here his head can be seen standing on display at the Yoshida-bashi bridge in the port town of Yokohama, where it remained for three days.
